In diesem Jahr jährte sich der Völkermord in Srebrenica am 11. Juli zum 25. Mal. Srebrenica, eine Stadt im Osten des heutigen Bosnien und Herzegowina, nahe der Grenze zu Serbien.
Traurige Berühmtheit gewann die Stadt während des Bosnienkriegs. Am 17. April 1992 (elf Tage nach Beginn des Bosnienkrieges) wurde sie erstmals von serbischen paramilitärischen Kräften angegriffen. Im Juli 1995 kam es zu einer Massenexekution von über 8’000 muslimisch-bosnischen Flüchtlingen vor den Augen der Weltöffentlichkeit.
Die Bosniakisch-Deutsche Gemeinde Karlsruhe und die Gesellschaft für bedrohte Völker lud daher zu einer Gedenkveranstaltung am Platz der Grundrechte ein, dem über 100 Leute folgten. Die Versammelten erhielten Einblick in die Geschichte des Bosnienkrieges und hörten Gedichte der bosniakisch-deutschen Gemeinde. Am Ende bleibt die Erkenntnis, dass Hass und Nationalismus grausame Verbrechen entstehen lassen, die wir als „Tiefpunkt des menschlichen Handels“ bezeichnen.
